HUDSON’S HISTORY

The Story of a New England Town

Hudson, a South Middlesex County community of over 18,000 people, was established in 1866. It is located on the Assabet River’s second waterfall. John Barnes, a settler, began the story of Hudson in 1698. Barnes was given an acre in the Indian Plantation, which was recently added to Marlborough’s acreage. He built a gristmill on the Assabet River’s north bank. Later, he added a sawmill and crossed the river so the road could continue to Lancaster. Lancaster was almost at Wood Square at the time.

The Mills, a section of Marlborough, saw slow and steady growth over the next 125 years. While several small industries clustered around the mill area, large farms stretched to the east and north. Although relations with Indians were good in the beginning, the settlers began to take more land from them.

Samuel Witt, John Hapgood and other residents of the Indian Plantation filed a petition to the Genera! Court requested that their land be made a separate parish or town. They claimed that it was too exhausting to attend meetings. The Court declined. Samuel Witt was later a member of Committees of Correspondence during Revolution. When word of the British march towards Concord and Lexing!ton came to light on April 19, 1775, several Hud!son men joined Minute Men companies and marched to Cambridge in support of the British soldiers.

The small community was renamed Feltonville in the mid 1800’s after its richest and most famous merchant. It had a hotel and a post office. Boston was connected to it by stage coach routes from Cox Street to Sudbury, then east to the city.

Factory construction boomed everywhere after the 1850’s brought steam power and railroads to the village. In 1860, there were 17 shoe or shoe-related businesses. French Canadian immigrants arrived from Ireland to join the descendants of early settlers who worked in the 975 jobs at the local plants.

Feltonville residents were prepared for the call to arms in 1861. They were an ardent group of abolitionists. Several local homes served as stations on the Underground Railway. These included the Goodale Home, on Chestnut Street, and the Curley Home (then Rice Farm), on Brigham Street. Many young men fought for the Union cause and 25 of them died.

After the war was over, there was an attempt to make Feltonville a corporation town in 1865. Union Hall was used for many meetings, as well as the nearby towns of Stow, Berlin and Marlborough. The General Court was notified that petitions were being made to incorporate a new town from the northern part of Marlborough, with a little from Stow. The petitions were approved on March 19, 1866 and Hudson became a town. Charles Hudson, a former resident of Hudson, was the first to be named after it. He donated $500 towards a library. Bolton sold the two-square mile land for $10,000 to Hudson’s new town two years later. Hudson’s area now measures 11.81 square miles.

The future looked bright for the new city. Modern factories allowed for more industries to be developed and attracted new people. In twenty years, new schools, a farm for the poor, and a new town hall were all built. Five volunteer fire departments protected homes and industries made of mostly wood and established banks.

In 1872, the town hall was dedicated. It is home to the town offices as well as a large hall that can be used for entertainment and civic meetings. It was home to a library, a bank room, schoolroom and district court.

A group of small boys, playing with fire crackers near the factory’s back, started a fire that decimated more than 40 buildings in the center of town on July 4, 1894. The new town grew like magic thanks to the strength and determination of the people since Hudson’s founding.

Hudson’s Business, Industry and Commerce History

Five volunteer fire companies were maintained in the town during the 1880s/90s. One of these was the Eureka Hand Pump. This pump, which could pump a stream of water of 1.5 inches (38mm) at 229 feet (70m), set a new record. Two boys, who were playing with firecrackers, started a fire on July 4, 1894 that destroyed 40 buildings and 20,000 m2 of central Hudson. Although no one was injured, the damage to the area was estimated at $400,000 in 1894 (roughly $11.1 million in 2018). Within a year, the town was largely rebuilt.

Hudson’s population grew to 5,500 by 1900 and the town built a power station on Cherry Street. Many homes were wired for electricity. Hudson still produces its own electricity under the supervision of the Hudson Light and Power Department. This non-profit municipal utility is owned by the town. In 1910, the brick Hudson Armory building, which housed local militia and later units from the Massachusetts National Guard, was opened. [10] Hudson was connected to Concord, Leominster and Marlborough by electric trolley lines. These lines lasted until the 1920s. The town’s factories grew and attracted immigrants from Italy, England, Portugal, Lithuanian, Poland, Greece, Albania, Greece, Portugal, Lithuania, Poland and Lithuania. The workers at the Firestone-Apsley Rubber Company spoke 19 languages by 1928. These immigrants often lived in boarding homes near their jobs. The Taylor Memorial Bridge was donated by Frank Taylor and Thomas Taylor, Hudson industrialists, to the town in 1926. It connects the public Wood Park and Apsley Parks across the Assabet River.

The majority of Hudson residents today are either of Irish or Portuguese origin. There is a smaller number of people of Brazilian, Italian and French descent. One-third of Hudson residents are either of Portuguese origin or birth. The majority of Hudson residents are of Portuguese descent. A smaller percentage come from the Azorean Island of Santa Maria and the Madeira Islands. Hudson’s Portuguese community maintains the Hudson Portuguese Club. It was founded in 1919. It outlived Hudson’s other ethnic clubs such as the Buonovia (Italian American), Lithuanian Citizens’ Club, and other Portuguese American clubs. The Hudson Portuguese Club, which was established in 2003 on the same location, replaced the original Port Street clubhouse by a function hall with a restaurant.

Hudson’s Portuguese American community can trace its roots back to 1886 when Jose Maria Tavares, a Portuguese American immigrant, arrived. Jose’s brothers Joao John and Manuel joined him in 1888. Three more Portuguese immigrants arrived in Hudson in 1888: Jose Braga (18 years old), Antonio Chaves (his sister Maria) and Antonio Chaves (16 years). The six-member Garcia family arrived in 1889. In the 1890s, the Bairos, Camara and Correia families were added. Jose Almada and Almada’s brother Manuel Silva arrived in Hudson in 1900.

In Hudson Mass, eleven additional Portuguese families lived by 1910: in Hudson: the Coito, Costa, Furtado, Grillo, Mello, Pereira, Pimentel, Rainha, Resendes, Ribeiro, and Sousa families. These first Portuguese immigrants were all from Santa Maria and Sao Miguel, Azorean islands.

In 1916, immigrants from Portugal arrived in Hudson. Hudson’s Portuguese population surpassed 1000 people in the 1920s. This was more than 10% of Hudson at that time. Many were factory workers but many owned small businesses. Hudson was also home to a small, but well-documented Lithuanian American population. This community was established in Hudson in 1897 by Anthony Markunas. Michael Rimkus was another early Lithuanian immigrant. He owned and operated a grocery shop on the corner at Loring and Broad streets, from 1908 to 1950. It is possible that Lithuanians arrived in Hudson from larger communities such as Nashua, Worcester and Boston. According to some, Hudson’s Lithuanians are known for their herb gardens, where they grew mint, chamomile and rue. Karol Baranowski, a long-time resident of Lois Street (now Mason Street), maintained an apiary.

Dominic Janciauskas was his next door neighbor, and a fellow Lithuanian American. He operated a silver-fox farm. The community was active and large enough to support the social-recreational Lithuanian Citizens Club on School Street, which operated from 1926 to 1960. Hudson’s population was approximately 8,000 between the 1920s and 1950s when some farms were purchased by developers. Hudson’s population grew to 16,000 in 1970 thanks to the new homes built on this property. In the 1990s, high-tech companies constructed plants in Hudson. The most notable was the Digital Equipment Corporation’s semiconductor factory. This facility was purchased by Intel just before Digital collapsed in 1998. The plant produced silicon chips and wafers under the control of Intel.

Many Hudson businesses were destroyed during the Great Recession of the 2000s. The downtown commercial district, as well as industrial establishments, were particularly affected. In 2013, Intel, Hudson’s largest employer, and charitable donor, announced that it would shut down its Hudson semiconductor factory. It also planned to lay off 700 employees by 2014. Initial efforts by Intel to find a buyer were unsuccessful. In 2015, Intel announced that it would close the Hudson semiconductor factory and lay off 700 employees. The Intel campus in Hudson, however, includes an 850-person microprocessor research & development facility. This facility has not been closed and is still operational as of 2020.

The Hudson’s downtown commercial area has seen an economic revival since the mid-2010s, when empty storefronts have been rented out. This is due to Hudson’s growing role as a regional culinary destination. Hudson’s craft beer scene began in 1980 with the opening of Horseshoe Pub & Restaurant. Horseshoe was a haven for beer lovers, boasting an 80-beer tap and Oktoberfest celebrations. [21] The first Spirit of Hudson Food and Brewfest was organized by the Hudson Rotary Club, Horseshoe Pub, and others to promote local restaurants and breweries. The event has grown to include dozens of local and international breweries. [22] In 2015, Hudson’s first microbrewery, Medusa Brewing Company opened. In 2018, a second, Ground Effect Brewing Company, opened in Hudson.

Hudson is home to approximately 20,000 people, but the town still maintains its traditional town meeting form. The eastern part of the town still has some light manufacturing and agricultural uses. This is a remnant of Hudson’s dual industrial and agrarian history. Hudson, however, is now a suburban suburb with many residents who commute to Boston and Worcester.

Marlborough, an industrial hub in eastern Massachusetts, has a long track record of commercial success and Hudson has certainly benefited from the commercial and business growth in Marlborough. Shoes became a symbol and a key product of Hudson, beginning with Boyd’s shoe-making plant in 1836. It soon ceased to be a major product in Massachusetts, but the Hudson shoe industry was strong with Rice and Hutchins remaining open until 1929, Frye boots up until the 1970s and Rockport Company still having an outlet.

Hudson was at the crossroads of major highways. Hudson began to attract 21st-century business leaders and high-tech companies by focusing on economic development through its Hudson Economic Development Corporation. Near our local Hudson-based company, you can find  some great small & large companies.

Below are a few of the many small, medium, and large businesses, near Lunova Insurance, that have made Marlborough & Hudson MA their company’s home over the years.

These companies are not the only ones that have made this community a home. Many small businesses and restaurants also make it home. You will find quality recreational facilities such as beaches, trails, and ponds in the community.

Hudson, MA has a city that strikes a delicate balance between high-tech industry and local community life. This vibrant city has many opportunities and is easily accessible to New England and other parts of Massachusetts. It also honors its historical past while moving into the future.
